Angela’s Favorite Protein Smoothie Recipe. As a food advocate and functional nutritionist, I like to start my day with a power smoothie that is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. The added nutrient-dense ingredients such as fruit, veggies, yogurt, fiber and good fats are all necessary for good nutrition, health, and vitality. But don’t stop there. I like to add superfoods to this protein drink for added health benefits.
What are superfoods?
Superfoods are foods that have been shown to have amazing positive health benefits. All fruits and vegetables can be said to be superfoods. In addition, there are many other foods that offer health advantages beyond your normal foods. The list of these superchargers continues to grow as more evidence is found in new research.
This is not an inclusive list but a few of my fav superfoods I like to add to my protein smoothies:
- MycoPure™ Golden Milk (plant-based protein powder (from pea and rice) fermented with shiitake mushrooms)
- Whole Body Collagen
- Green tea (I use EGCG capsules which I open up and pour into my drink)
- Flaxseeds (freshly ground)
- Chia or Hemp seeds
- Probiotic Synergy™ powder
- Nuts and seeds (raw)
- Chlorella
- Turmeric
- Camu (best food source of vitamin C)
- Pomegranate powder
- Bee Pollen
- Acai
- Coconut oil
- Cinnamon
- Fresh ginger root
- Liquid (8 ounces of one or parts of filtered water, almond, coconut, nut or hemp milk, or bone broth etc.)
- Cayenne (a dash)
“No food, including those labeled ‘superfoods’, can compensate for unhealthy eating,” If people mistakenly believe they can ‘undo’ the damage caused by unhealthy foods by eating a superfood, they may continue making routine choices that are unhealthy and increase their risk of long-term illness. However, when you eat a clean diet and add superfoods, that’s a real game-changer.
This protein drink is an easy way to nourish your body with essential nutrients that provide anti-inflammatory rich compounds and improve your body’s natural detoxification process. I recommend starting your morning with my favorite protein drink to balance your blood sugar for the day, which can keep you more full longer and help with weight loss. Other health-promoting benefits include improved muscle building and athletic performance and better digestion.
You can use any protein powder that appeals to you. Here are my recommendations for a whey-based protein, or try this vegetarian (pea) protein if you prefer. My latest favorite protein powder as mentioned above is MycoPure™ Golden Milk which is a plant-based protein powder (from pea and rice) fermented from shiitake mushrooms. These protein formulas are ideal for people needing support with weight control, GI health, detoxification, immune health, heavy metals, and overall well-being. These proteins are sweetened with stevia or Luo Han Guo extract to avoid any sugar spikes. They are also available in vanilla or chocolate flavor.
Feel free to mix up the ingredients for extra health benefits or to suit your taste buds. All you need is a blender and you are ready to enjoy this quick and easy way to ramp-up and get energized!
