Can I literally call this recipe the new-age chai latte? This is a dairy-free, caffeine-free and refined sugar-free chai latte recipe.
Chai tea is a rich, spicy and aromatic drink that has in the last decade captured a lot of loyal tea drinking fans. There are many different variations of chai tea on the market but the classic chai tea is usually a blend of black tea with cloves, cardamom, black pepper, and ginger.
Chai contains a very high amount of antioxidant properties and has been used medicinally since the early ages to help improve digestion, immune system and to fight against inflammation. Black tea is the base of chai tea and is very rich in powerful antioxidants such as thearubigins, epicatechins, and catechins while containing very low levels of caffeine. Thearubigins, epicatechins, and catechins have all been shown to be powerful protectors of cell and DNA damage from free radicals. Black tea has also been found to significantly lower your risks of Type 2 diabetes by effectively lowering your plasma glucose concentration in a short amount of time and increasing your body’s natural production of insulin. Instead of using dairy milk to make this latte creamy, I am using almond butter. Almonds in whatever form – raw nuts, toasted nuts, butter, milk, etc. have all been proven to be extremely nutritious for you. Almonds are very high in fiber, calcium, vitamin E and B-vitamins. Like coconut milk, the fat content in almonds is mainly healthy good fats – monounsaturated fats that you want for your body. Nutrition-wise, it is recommended to consume almonds with their skin on because the skin contains nutrients too especially powerful antioxidants. But depending on the application that you are trying to use it for in the kitchen, it is ok to use blanched almonds too. They are still very healthy for you, especially your heart. Almonds have also been shown to be beneficial in lowering your overall cholesterol levels, increasing the good ones and lowering the bad ones.
