Cleanse your body simply with lemons – the miracle fruit
Have you ever had one of those “cheat days”? You know the kind – when you throw the diet out the window and indulge in anything? Have you ever had those cheat days build on each other…and build and build? Well, there is a miracle food and it is called — Lemons!
The good news is that there’s a simple, inexpensive answer to that bloated, toxic, exhausted feeling, and it’s probably in your refrigerator right now. Reset yourself starting this very moment by using one of my favorite time-tested tips for detoxifying. Research shows that a simple glass of lemon water (freshly-squeezed lemon, of course) can cleanse you while becoming a natural and effective way to heal your body.
Start your day with that glass of lemon water. You’ll feel the results! It’s as if your digestive system wakes up and starts working. An easy way to detox. And detoxing is one of the most important things you can do to shake off the accumulation of calories, sugar, and fats before they begin their ugly transformation into mucus, toxic byproducts and arterial congestions.
What is Lemon Good For?
Our bodies have four primary channels of elimination: the intestines, liver, kidneys, and skin. Each of these elimination channels can be enhanced with herbs and simple practices.
Here is how lemon water helps to flush toxins and detoxify these organs:
- For the intestines: aids in digestion, neutralizes stomach acids, flushes out bad bacteria, helps with bowel movements, balances stomach pH and alkalizes the body.
- For the liver: flushes your body of deadly toxins and helps reduce the liver of toxic overload. Helps stimulate the liver to produce bile and enzymes, and assists the gallbladder in dissolving gallstones.
- The kidneys: breakdown calcifications, including kidney stones (making it less likely for stones to form in the first place); prevents dehydration while helping to increase urine volume and increase pH alkalinity.
- For skin detox: natural cleanser used internally and externally for better-looking skin and improves wound healing.
Other amazing health benefits of lemons
- fights against viruses, bacteria, germs
- destroys intestinal worms and parasites
- maintains the ideal intestinal ecology
- boosts circulation
- improves blood production
- helps maintain optimum cholesterol levels
- boosts immunity
- enhances metabolism
- reduces pain associated with sunburn and insect bites
- reduces inflammation and arthritis pain
- promotes wound healing
- contains 22 anti-cancer compounds due to high limonene, which causes apoptosis (terminates cancer cells)
Take the 21-Day Lemon challenge
Start each morning with a glass of filtered water at room temperature and freshly squeezed lemon (preferably organic). You can start slowly with half a lemon and work your way up to a whole lemon. Wait at least 15 minutes before eating your breakfast.
Do this for 21 consecutive days and see the difference in how you feel from your digestive system to your mental clarity and sense of well-being. See how adding a simple lemon water cleanse to your daily routine helps to transform you.
Lemon Water
We sometimes want warm beverages like a cup of coffee or tea to get our bodies going or to help us relax. But as a healthy alternative, try a cup of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon. The water should always be purified. If you want a little more punch in your drink, just add some green tea or your favorite herbal tea. However, on a simple level, plain lemon water is very cleansing and detoxifying on its own.
Try this tip for a gentle cleanse. End each day with a cup of hot water with freshly squeezed lemon. For variety add your favorite herbal tea and a few drops of Tabasco sauce to rev up your metabolism and help with weight loss.
Bottled Lemon Juice vs Fresh Lemon Equivalent
Not all lemon juice is created equal. While it may seem like a no-brainer, there is a huge difference between a freshly squeezed lemon and the lemon concentrate in a bottle that you buy from the store.
Here are some differences that may help you decide on which one is the real deal.
Lemon Juice Concentrate
The bottled stuff is processed and preservatives and food coloring agents are added to increase its shelf life. A common chemical used is “sulfites” which some people may respond to with allergic reactions. Preservatives are used to prevent the discoloration of the lemon and preventing it from rotting on the shelves. The processed stuff tends to lose its taste due to its exposure to oxygen. It is found that after a half-hour from cutting the lemon, the nutrients start to degrade exponentially. To make up for this loss, manufacturers tend to add more chemicals such as taste matching additives or coloring to make it more appealing. Some manufacturers also add vitamins to increase the value of the concentrate.
Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
While some people may prefer to buy lemon concentrate, it doesn’t compare to the real thing. First, I believe the biggest difference of fresh lemons over concentrates comes from their enzymatic properties. This is a big one! When the lemon concentrate is stored it loses the properties of the live enzymes that are so beneficial to your health. The most important benefit, of fresh lemon juice, is how it increases your body’s production of hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is needed for proper digestion, bile secretion and the elimination processes within your body as mentioned above.
Lemon fruit provides nutrients like vitamin A and vitamin C, known as ascorbic acid for which lemons are greatly valued. However, these nutrients are destroyed by heat, food processing and when exposed to chemicals. Another huge reason to use freshly squeezed lemons over concentrate.
Bottom line, just buy a big bag of lemons and make your own fresh lemon juice, as you need real time. The investment in your health outweighs the inconvenience of squeezing them and time.
Uses of Lemon
You can find many other amazing uses for lemons. Fresh lemon juice can be a great resource for your daily diet beyond lemon water or tea. It can be added to your prepared dishes such as vegetables, salads, and fish. I always like to add freshly squeezed lemon to all my steamed vegetable dishes. Best yet, you will always have a hint of lemon taste in whatever you are cooking.
By now, I hope you can see why this tiny yellow lemon is considered a miracle fruit!
In a nut nutshell, lemons are a disease-fighting fruit that can gently heal your body every day while serving as a natural cleanser and potent detoxifier. That a big load off your body!

Hello Nutritionist Angela,
Thankyou for this highly informative article. I am planning to start the 21-Day Lemon Challenge today.
Based on your article, given below is the Action Plan that I plan to implement:
***** Action Plan *****
Start each morning with a glass of filtered water at room temperature and freshly squeezed lemon (preferably organic). You can start slowly with ½ a lemon and work your way up to a whole lemon. Wait at least 15 minutes before eating your breakfast.
For added benefits, end each day with a cup of hot water and freshly-squeezed lemon. Add your favorite herbal tea or a few drops of Tabasco sauce to rev up your metabolism and help with weight loss.
*********************
I will start with a Fresh 1/2 lemon in the morning and use the remaining 1/2 Lemon in the night. Is that Okay?
The reason I ask the above question is because in the LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE section, you have mentioned the following-
It is found that after a half-hour from cutting the lemon, the nutrients start to degrade exponentially.
Please let me know if it is okay to use Fresh 1/2 lemon in the morning and the remaining 1/2 in the night
OR
I should use 1 whole fresh lemon in the morning and 1 whole fresh lemon in the night.
Thankyou and keep up the great work that Nutrition Key is doing. The Westchester residents and the world at large, desperately need this information.
