Don’t like the taste of commercially available cough lozenges? Here’s a sweet remedy for an annoying cough. And it is homemade and all natural! Show yourself and your loved ones that you care especially during the flu and cough season with this simple and quick soothing cough syrup.
The key medicinal ingredient in this cough syrup recipe is the marshmallow root. The marshmallow root has been known and used for its medicinal properties throughout Europe and the Middle East from very early on. They contain compounds that help soothe and moisten the mucous membranes of our respiratory and digestive system and our urinary tracts. It also helps reduce the swelling in our lymph nodes and speed up our healing from a lingering cough. You can easily purchase marshmallow root from major spice and herb stores or get them in powder form (comes in a jar or bottle) from any major health foods store. [1]
I’ve added ginger in this cough syrup recipe to help relieve any nausea or loss of appetite that commonly comes along with an annoying dry cough. It is hard to want to eat anything and let alone try to digest anything when we are trying to fight a dry cough. So adding some good old ginger here helps our bodies take in the essential nutrients that are just as important in any recovery process as fighting off the offending virus or bacteria.
The natural sweeteners in this recipe are the lemon juice or pineapple juice along with a healthy pinch of cinnamon. Feel free to switch out the suggested lemon or pineapple juice with your favorite juices such as cherry or pomegranate for example. The goal is to make this palatable and welcoming. The chamomile flowers are like the icing on the cake here. Your body needs a good rest when it’s working a double shift to fight off a nasty cough.
Try this the next time you are out of luck with a dry cough. And you will realize how easy it is to stop spending your money on overpriced over-the-counter cough lozenges that just may not work.
Add a soothing homemade tea to ambush that nasty cold or flu.

Looking at the ingredients, this syrup must be working wonders against coughing. As a pharmacist, I used to have countless patients with dry, irritating cough and marshmallow root was always the 1st choice. Thanks to other ingredients, your syrup is also great for a mucus-rich cough.
Speaking of marshmallow root, there’s another simple recipe — leaving the roots in cold water overnight and consuming the fluid. Have you tried that one yet?
Thanks again and keep it up!
Hi Alex,
I appreciate your feedback on this cough syrup and marshmallow root. It is great to know that as a pharmacist you recommend natural ingredients such as this. I am sure the people you speak with really benefit from your healthy recommendations as well.
Thanks a lot for your reply, Angela! Sure, it’s always good to teach patients about natural cures, which are often equally effective without any side effects. Best wishes!
