Homemade Elderberry Syrup for Cold and Flu
Elderberries are abundant of flavonoids and other essential antioxidants such as quercetin, kaempferol, rutin, phenolic acids and anthocyanins that give it its medicinal properties to fight inflammations, prevent cellular damages and boost your immune system. Elderberries can be consumed in many different ways such as in juices, teas, jams or syrups. Regardless of how they are consumed, they are best known as a natural deterrence and a cure for the common cold and flu because the anthocyanidins is an excellent immune system booster. To fight off infections like the cold or flu, our body needs to have a strong immune system.

Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Fill a medium saucepan with all ingredients except the honey and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce to a simmer and cook covered for about 45 to 60 minutes until the liquid has reduced by almost half.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Strain into a glass jar or bowl and let cool further for another 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Then stir in honey and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
  1. To store the elderberry syrup, pour into a pint-size mason jar or 16-ounce glass bottle and store in the refrigerator.
  2. The standard dose for cold or flu prevention is 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for kids and 1/2 to 1 tablespoon for adults a day. If recovering from a cold orĀ flu, increase the frequency of the standard dose to every 3 to 3 hours until symptoms disappear.
