Golden Milk Recipe
Golden milk has become a health food superstar these days as turmeric’s (also known as curcumin) anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties become more known and established. But now there’s another innovative way to incorporate this amazingly healthy spice into your everyday diet. But a little bit of this nutrient-dense root goes a long way. To reap the most benefits, it is best to be consistent with your intake and take it in small amounts (like ¼ to ½ teaspoon) each time. This drink can be consumed any time of the day; it can give you that boost you need in the morning or help promote better sleep at night. You can have it either cold or warm which makes it a perfect beverage all seasons of the year. Feel free to switch out the choice of milk and/or sweeteners (honey, figs and cinnamon) in this recipe to your preferred ones but do keep the black pepper and ghee/coconut oil because it enhances the absorption of turmeric by your body. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Since Golden Milk is a turmeric-based drink you can get started in one of two ways:

1) cook your turmeric root or powder on the stove with all the ingredients, or 2) make a paste with turmeric and water and store it in the refrigerator for later use.

There are many variations to making Golden Milk to give the flavor you enjoy:

1. Replace cow’s milk with plant-based milk alternatives like coconut, rice, hemp, almond, cashew or a blend of all of them. Milk alternatives are especially helpful if you have milk allergies.
2. Sweeten with natural sugar alternatives such as raw honey, stevia, or brown sugar.
3. If drinking golden milk before bed, I recommend you use stevia or a small amount of raw honey to avoid revving up your body late at night.
4. Other sugar alternatives include dried fruits such as dates, dried raisins or cranberries.
5. Spice up your drink with spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger or vanilla extract to enhance its flavor.

Final thoughts…

1. Use quality organic ingredients when possible since the purpose of this healing beverage is to reduce inflammation and detoxify your body.
2. Use non-reactive cookware such as stainless-steel or glass pot when cooking your batch. Avoid using the microwave or nonstick cookware that contains Teflon.
3. Be careful as turmeric will stain anything it encounters, and the stain may not come out.
